Digital Backbone for Results-Based Financing in Malawi
The Ngwee Ngwee Ngwee Fund (NNNF) is a $20 million World Bank–funded Results-Based Financing initiative launched in 2023 to accelerate rural electrification across Malawi through off-grid solar solutions.
Designed to catalyze private sector participation in energy access, the Fund provides $14 million in concessional loans and $6 million in Results-Based Financing (RBF) grants to participating solar companies. The RBF window delivers approximately 15% end-user subsidies, reducing the cost of solar home systems and making electricity more affordable for rural households.
By blending debt financing with targeted subsidies, NNNF strengthens the commercial viability of off-grid solar companies while directly expanding access to electricity in underserved communities. The program supports Malawi’s national objective of increasing electricity access to 30%, laying the foundation for long-term, market-driven energy expansion.
